What to Plant?

With 2,000 native species of plants found in the Chicago area, it can be hard to decide what’s best to plant. Here are some suggestions our experts give for attracting wildlife to Chicago yards.

To attract songbirds and hummingbirds:

Plant viburnum, hazelnut, hawthorn, cardinal lobelia, native phlox, juneberry, hackberry, juniper.

To attract butterflies:

Plant Golden Alexander, blazing star, sedges, native asters, purple coneflower, and any milkweeds.
