Lake County Forest Preserves Cooperate with Highland Park to Acquire 133 Acres

On February 15, The Lake County Forest Preserves, working with the City of Highland Park and the Park District of Highland Park, permanently preserved 133.7 acres of woodlands and wetlands in a unique intergovernmental agreement that will provide future greenway connections between several forest preserves and parks.

The property, located at the southeast corner of Half Day Road (Route 22) and U.S. Route 41, contains a mix of woodlands, wetlands and a golf course. The Lake County Forest Preserves will receive three conservation easements from the City of Highland Park and pay up to $1 million toward the cost of preserving the land. The Park District of Highland Park will restore and manage the preserved land.

"The voters of southeastern Lake County were great supporters of our successful 1999 and 2000 forest preserve referenda to buy new lands," said Al Westerman, Lake County Forest Preserve president. "It’s great to be able to help them preserve some of the last unprotected open space left in their landlocked communities."
